What are dermal fillers?

Also known as hyaluronic acid fillers

A dermal filler is a gel-like, volumizing substance that is injected beneath the skin to treat lines or wrinkles, restore lost volume or enhance facial contours. Over the last few years, more than 1 million men and women annually have chosen this popular skin rejuvenation treatment, which can be a cost-effective way to look younger without surgery or downtime.

At our Joplin cosmetic surgery center, we use several types of filler: Restylane, Juvéderm, Sculptra, and Radiesse. When performed by a qualified injector who is an expert at medical aesthetics, all are completely safe and clinically proven to provide results. Radiesse volumizing filler acts as a scaffold under the skin, providing structure, stimulating your own natural collagen to grow, and smoothing wrinkles. Restylane and Juvéderm are cosmetic dermal fillers made of hyaluronic acid, a substance that exists naturally in the human body. Sculptra Aesthetic is made from poly-L lactic acid and is an indirect filler that restores skin volume by causing your own cells to naturally produce more of your own collagen.

WHO IS A GOOD CANDIDATE?

Female or Male, 21 - 65+ Years Old and Generally in Good Health

Am I a good candidate for this procedure?

As you age, your body’s natural collagen production decreases, which is a major factor in the development of wrinkles in the skin. This is because collagen is a key structural component that keeps skin’s appearance plump, youthful-looking, and smooth. If you wish to combat wrinkles and aging skin or any of the following describe you, filler could be an option to consider:

  • You have deep lines or wrinkles around the eyes, brow or mouth
  • You would like to change the contours of your jaw, nose or lips
  • You want to boost volume in your lips or cheeks
  • You are interested in a minimally invasive, non-surgical treatment option
  • You are okay with subtle results that are not permanent
  • You are not quite ready for surgical options like Facetite, facelift, or fat transfer

How can injectables enhance my appearance?

While dermal fillers are casually known as “wrinkle fillers,” they can do much more than just smooth out wrinkles (although they are excellent at this too)! Here are a few of the common appearance issues this procedure can help address:

  • Smooth out wrinkles around nose and mouth (a.k.a. marionette lines, smile lines, and parentheses lines)
  • Minimize signs of aging
  • Enhance & restore volume to sunken cheeks
  • Diminish vertical lip lines
  • Add volume to and enhance the lips
  • Smooth out a chin crease
  • Contour the nose

Depending on the product and the areas treated, you should be able to notice results immediately after receiving filler injections. Some patients experience mild bruising and swelling of the skin around treated areas, but these are temporary and should subside over the days following treatment.

How long do results last?

How long results last varies depending on the product used, the area of skin treated, and the patient. Generally speaking, the denser the product is and the more deeply it is injected into the skin, the longer it will last, although this is not a hard and fast rule. To maintain your results, return to our medical spa on a regular basis to have your cosmetic surgeon repeat treatment, adjusting the amount and techniques as necessary to ensure optimal results. (To further enhance your results, talk with your injector about laser for a more even overall skin tone and neuromodulators for upper-face wrinkles.)

Formula options

Hyaluronic acid fillers tend to be the most temporary injectable option, and therefore are often recommended for first-time filler patients. These will typically last from 6 to 18 months, depending on treatment and product(s) used. For example, injections to restore volume to the lips will wear out a little faster than those to smooth wrinkles along the nasolabial folds. Certain hyaluronic acid fillers, like Restylane Lyft or VOLUMA, are formulated to last longer, but are usually limited to certain areas, such as the cheeks.

Synthetic fillers tend to be longer lasting injectables, as they are not absorbed by the body. They can be a great option for the right patient, but you’ll want to be ready to commit to results that will be there for several years—and take care to choose an experienced, qualified provider whose aesthetic style you like.

Had a great experience. Dr. Maningas and his staff are very kind. All of my questions were clearly answered and I felt completely comfortable.

What else do I need to know?

I HAVE AN EVENT, WHEN SHOULD I GET FILLERS?

We recommend getting any type of filler treatment done at least 2 or more weeks before any big event. This allows type for any swelling and bruising to subside and your injectable result to be natural and beautiful.

DO I HAVE TO KEEP GETTING FILLER INJECTIONS?

Yes. The most common type of filler that we use is a hyaluronic acid filler. They are a temporary option since overtime they will be absorbed by the body. They can also be dissolved if necessary. These will typically last from 6 to 18 months, depending on treatment and product(s) used.

WILL I BRUISE?

Every patient is different. Bruising is not uncommon and is possible after any injectable treatment. NSAIDs (e.g., aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen) or blood thinners, can increase the likelihood of bruising so be sure to let your provider know if you are or have been taking medications that would fall into this category.
